White Hydrangeas

Summer is a pretty dry time in my garden. After the beautiful flush of flowers in June and sometimes goes into July, the garden dries out and the flowers go into a sort of hibernation. They usually rejuvenate again in September and give me a second flush of colour.

I made a mistake this year with my white hydrangeas, I cut them almost to ground level. I was reading the instructions and merrily went ahead. It was only when I had finished I discovered that I was reading the wrong label and should not have pruned them at all! I was so annoyed with myself. I did get a few flowers but nothing that matched their splendour last year.
Here is a painting from last year that shows how big these hydrangea flowers get:

Pansy Fever Oil Painting

 Pansy Fever by Marion Hedger
Oil on canvas board 24x30cm (approx 10" x 12")
Painted wet in wet.

Another pansy painting straight off the easel. I love painting these pansies, and those yellow ones really talk to me. This is slightly larger than my earlier pansy painting (see HERE) and more of a still life composition. I painted it wet in wet, trying to stay loose. I succeeded in parts, but I still find myself trying to put in all the details.
This is still wet and I will look at it tomorrow to see what needs tweaking. Those blue shadows are too blue in this photo, so I will also see if I can get a better photo. I always have trouble with photographing blues.

In progress Colourful Panisies Oil Painting - Garden 101 series

Colourful Pansies Work in Progress
Oil on canvas panel, 18x24cm

I am working on some pansy paintings at the moment. I am cheating a little because they are not strictly from my garden, but on the way into the garden. I need something floral and colourful to paint after trying to get back into the swing after a long vacation, and these fit the bill nicely.

I am still looking at this painting to see if it is finished and what tweaks may be needed. I think I may need to work on the back purple pansy as does not recede enough.

I will post an update when finished

Pink Mallow Garden 101 series Oil Painting

Pink Mallow oil painting
Oil on canvas panel, painted wet in wet
24 x 18 cm (approx 10" x 7")

I painted this as part of my Garden 101 series in the summer. I didn't quite like it at that stage. I was looking through my "to be finished" pile and liked it much better than when I first painted it. I tweaked a few bits and now I feel it is finished.

Orange Delight oil painting

Orange delight gerbera painting by Marion Hedger
Orange Delight Oil Painting by Marion Hedger
Orange Delight by Marion Hedger
24cmx18cm oil on canvas board

I have a gerbera plant growing in a garden pot for the last 4 years or so. It produces these vibrant blooms each year, although it gets so little attention.  I placed one in a faceted triangular vase which I really like - although the shapes and reflections were hard to paint. I placed the vase on some old stripey curtain fabric. The challenge on Daily Paintworks that week was "stripes".
This is part of my garden 101 daily painting series.

These white hydrangeas welcome me every time I venture out of the back door. They sit in a large pot showing off their beautiful white heads. This is their summer plumage, but as summer goes on they will eventually turn pink then a greeny pink colour.

Pink Geraniums oil painting

Pink Geraniums Container Plant by Marion Hedger
Oil on canvas panel, 17x24 cm (approx 7"x11")

These pink geraniums - or should I say pelargoniums? - are part of my container garden that brightesn up my back patio area in the summer. Because we have such dry summers, it is hard to have anything flowering as most of the plants go into a dormant stage. So I plant up a lot of containers to brighten the barbeque area. It's a win win situation as they are also lovely to paint.

Part of my Garden 101 series.

Sunny Geranium en plein aire painting in oils

My pots of geraniums are coming along nicely, and who could resist painting them. They give such a splash of colour, it makes me smile when I see them.

18x24cm oils on canvas board (MDF)

I painted the board with an underpainting of pink for this one. Not a lot of it shows through in the final painting, but enough to give the red geraniums a sunny glow.

Calla Lilies, oil

Here is an update on the plein aire calla lilies I posted earlier. I have lightened the top of the background, added more contrasts, and very slightly smoothed some of the lily.
 15x20cm (6"x8")
Oil on canvas board
I think I prefer it. It didn't need much tinkering so I am quite happy with the result.

Calla Lilies Alla Prima oil painting

I've set myself a task to do 101 daily paintings related to my gardens, to try and loosen up my style. I did a few featuring the lemons and oranges from my trees but now that the flowers are blooming I am using those and painting en plein aire when possible. I am taking the liberty of cross posting in this blog.
Here is one of the calla lilies

I'd like your opinions. I am quite happy with them when I paint them (I have several iris paintings which I shall post later) - but when looking at them later, they leave me less than satisfied.

I am always undecided on whether or not to leave well enough alone (and use as a ref to see if I am improving), or to rework some of the areas and bring them up to a more finished piece. Or is this my nitpicking and fiddling side taking over.
All comments welcome.

PS I do like sloshing that thick paint around.
